I started making these tote bags years ago, mainly so I could have a different answer to the question we each hear hundreds of times a year: "Would you like paper or plastic today?"
How satisfying to be able to respond, "Neither, I brought my own bags." What began as a personal solution grew as I gave bags to grateful friends—many of whom are still using the workhorse totes I sewed ten years ago. Mine have been through the wash countless times, and are still going strong!
The bags attracted an admiring audience when I used them. After the hundredth fellow shopper queried, "Where did you get those tote bags?" I began to dream in earnest of a business that would help cut the cycle of bags inside of bags inside of bags...with style.
That is the kernel at the heart of World Totes.
Every bag we sell on this site is made by someone who earns a fair wage for his or her efforts. As we expand our offerings, fair wages and fair trade will continue to be a central commitment. And World Totes is committed to supporting community economic development and making other contributions to the communities in which we work.
This holiday season, we'll also begin selling reusable fabric gift bags on WorldTotes.com. I started making these to avoid the post-Christmas piles of used wrapping paper, and found they were easy for my kids—and my husband—to use, saved me time, and made great gifts all by themselves! We use these year after year in my family.
